Christmas brunch

After having spent a restful and rejuvenating Christmas in Saint-Augustin, Antoine and I were off to Ottawa to see my family for New Years.

On the way, we stopped for brunch with this good-looking couple...

Feeling festive, we started off with a little mimosa and tucked into some homemade quiche Lorraine and waffles, fruit salad, and sausages with maple syrup. 


Steph and I used to be roommates, so it felt like the 'good old days' when the four of us used to hang out. It is like the old saying, "True friendship is about isn't about being inseparable, it is being separated and nothing changes." 

Here's to friendships, new & old in 2013. Happy New Year!

Rhume 101

When I am feeling a little under the weather, this is what I enjoy having for breakfast:  porridge (I added blueberries - plenty of antioxidants there), toast & honey with Aveda comforting tea. Part comfort food, part cold fighting agents - au revoir petit rhume!

Lawrence

This weekend my sister, Megan, came with her boyfriend & company to profit from the holiday shopping at Simon's, amongst all the other shops on Saint Catherine.  They also snuck in a little brunch with yours truly :)

I booked us a place at Lawrence, a new staple in Montreal's Mile-End that serves up English-inspired fare:

French toast with apples & cranberries
Gloucester pancakes, bacon, apples, & ricotta
Ham, Tomme, and fried egg on toast
English Breakfast (blood pudding not pictured ;)

Rule Britannia

In anticipation to our viewing of Skyfall today, I was feeling entirely British.  Thus, a good old cheese and beans on toast with fried egg and mushrooms, served with a cuppa Lady Grey.  Both were excellent.


It's dead easy too - just put your toast under the grill, after a couples minutes, flip it over and add your cheese of choice (nothing beats the classic cheddar), take it out when the cheese is bubbling.  Cover with heated beans. Voilà.

Entre ergos

This Saturday a few of us OTs got together to enjoy some good food in good company.

We started with Joliane's fruit salad topped with cinnamon and mint..


..my Lemon blueberry poppy seed muffins (recipe from Joy the Baker)...


...and Audrey's scrambled eggs (made with 10% cooking cream and chives - yum!) and bacon.


Delightfully followed by Linda's chocolate and blueberry pancakes,  Eveline's chocolate waffles, both topped with Agnès' berry salad.  I also enjoyed my first Nespresso coffee.


Despite all this sweetness, saltiness and all-around goodness, we did get down to talking about the corruption scandals happening in Montreal right now, as well as how we are affected by the newly implemented Loi 21...

We ended it off with a good brew of David's Tea.  I hope to return the favour one day as hostess :-)

Megan ran a marathon

That's right, my sister is now officially a marathoner!  

Earlier this year, Megan announced to us that she had signed up with Team in Training to run the Toronto Waterfront Marathon.  And so ensued weeks of early morning and after-work practices in addition to organizing/participating in several fundraising events very impressive Meg! :)

On the day of the race, Megan's boyfriend Matt, my parents, Antoine and I all stationed ourselves strategically around the course to support her along the way.

After seeing her at the start and at the 5km mark, Antoine and I hopped on the tram to the Beaches where we ate a local diner before cheering her on at the 31km mark.

Yes, we did feel particularly gluttonous at this time...

The entire route, she looked great and was smiling every time we saw her - what a champ.

By the day of the marathon, she was the top individual fund collector of all the 'TNT'-ers.  Congratulations Megan, you're an inspiration to me!! xoxo

Rhubarbe

On this cold and rainy day, we went here for breakfast and ate...

...which also included a cheese and chive scone to start and a pastry to finish.  It was the art of taking good, simple ingredients, and delivering perfection (or the nearest thing).  Then, we went to see this.

New take on a classic


Raisin bread (care of Le Fromentier) french toast, berries from l'Île d'Orléans, & bacon.  It's the bread (and perhaps the fact we sprinkled some cocoa and icing sugar on top) that made the difference.  

We then took the bikes and headed off to Marché Bonsecours for The World Press Photo (on now until the 30th of September).  Powerful & provocative images - challenging, destabilizing even, but worthwhile.

Back to basics


Just a good ol' fry-up: eggs, mushrooms, potatoes & toast with mama bear's seville marmalade (she uses canned seville oranges as a time saver) - fits the bill after a Saturday morning lie-in...

Pre-Boston Frittata

  
This Labour Day weekend, we decided to visit Boston, MA for an end-of-summer get-away.  The night before we left, we made a vegetable frittata (mum's recipe below).  You generally always have the ingredients in your fridge and can re-heat the leftovers like we did.  Add some Première Moisson country white bread (with cherry and plum jam from our neighbour!) and you are ready for the several hours ahead in the car!  (Unfortunately, the place we wanted to go for breakfast in Boston was closed for holidays - to be enjoyed on another trip :)


Vegetable Frittata
          1 TBSP. vegetable oil
          1 Cup broccoli florets, cut into bite-sized pieces
          1 carrot, grated
          1 small onion,chopped finely
          1/2 red pepper, chopped
          4 eggs
          1/2 Cup milk
          1 TBSP chopped parsley
          1/4 TSP salt
          1/4 TSP Tabasco Sauce (if you don't have it, it's fine without)
          3/4 Cup cheddar cheese, grated
          1 TBSP parmesan cheese, grated

Heat oil in a frying pan.Add broccoli,carrot,onion and red pepper.Cook for about 5 minutes,stirring, or until broccoli is tender crisp.

  1. Beat together eggs, milk, parsley, salt and Tabasco until blended.
  2. Pour mixture over vegetables.Sprinkle with cheeses and reduce heat to low.
  3. Cook until eggs are set underneath and top of frittata is slightly wobbly.Do not stir.
  4. Place under grill and cook until the top browns slightly.
  5. Remove from grill carefully (the handle will be very hot) and cut into wedges.  You can reheat leftovers the next day.

My brother came to visit

This past Saturday, my brother came to visit Montreal -partly for a stag night, partly to see his his little sis.  I LOVE having visitors, showing them around my favorite nooks and crannies of the city.  This was extra special seeing as it was my esteemed older brother who now lives in the UK.  I picked him from the train station and we took the metro back to our place in the Plateau.  Brunch was first on the to-do list and we went with Café Les Entretiens - classic breakfasts, good value and fantastic ambiance.

We then rented him a Bixi and cycled off to the Mile-End, checking out places like Style Labo, The Spice Station, Drawn and Quarterly and ending at Cafe Olimpico.  Perfection.

Le clocher penché

Early on in our 'courtship', Antoine took me to this bistro in the up-and-coming neighbourhood of Saint-Roch, Quebec City - and I was smitten (with him and the restaurant).  Le clocher penché is exquisite and exotic.  On our last visit to 'la capitale nationale', we made sure to spend a morning reading La Presse and lingering over...

Fully satiated, we spent the afternoon touring l'Île d'Orléans, a picturesque island in the Saint-Lawrence with ample foodie stops and a gorgeous lookout, with Jonathan as our guide (merci Jonathan!)...

Oh Canada!

A & I drove down (stopping in on Finnegan's market in Hudson along the way) to Ottawa for the long weekend.  After spending a soggy weekend in Maine, we were able to relax, visit friends, and, of course, delight in my mum's superb home cooking.  My dad, who recently purchased a new toy, a "Big Green Egg" the latest craze in summer grilling, also treated us to some new specials.

Decked out in red & white, we tucked into: broccoli and ham quiche, green salad & tomato basil salad (veg from a Bryson farms organic basket), cinnamon rolls, SuzyQ's gourmet donuts (the maple bacon - WOW!), and a selection of cheese and crackers.  Num num num...

Food always tastes better on white plates, no?

Vacation photos - Maine aka. "Vacationland"

'twas a dark and stormy night... Sounds like the beginning of a horror story, but no, it also encapsulates our camping experience in Maine.  Thankfully, there were two good breakfasts to be had.  After a soggy night in Acadia National Park, the sky cleared and we walked to the sea...



...and had breakfast in Southwest Harbor.  Considering our dinner the night before consisted of chips, beer, and two campfire hotdogs whilst sitting in the car, we were ready for a good meal.  As you can tell by my hunger, the photographs were taken mid-meal.




The rest of the day was lovely - we drove to Camden, and had some home-style lemonade by the harbor, then made our way to our stay for the night, a farmhouse outside of Rockland.  It was the highlight of the trip by far.  We got along well with the hosts, sharing many a conversation.  The next morning, we had breakfast on the patio.  Eggs from the chickens running wild in the garden and a smoothie with local berries, right on!



Unfortunately, the weather for the next couple days predicted 100% heavy thunderstorms and we were meant to be camping on the beach.  Thus, we thought it best to take a visit to Portland, and head home (through the White Mountain National Forest nonetheless!).

A Diamond Jubilee

I will admit it, I am fiercely proud of my British heritage (not always the case whilst travelling abroad though, as you can imagine...).  Despite any qualms one may have with the British, one must admit - they can put on a hell of a show/party/extravaganza.  The festivities that surrounded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee fell nothing short of that.  I woke up on Sunday morning and caught the beginning (and, well, middle and end) of the Themes flotilla.  Antoine, meanwhile, knowing that it would be difficult to pry me away from the event prepared some tea and French toast (hint, hint?).

The only thing missing was some gin. #ginoclock

Un nouveau chez nous

New housemates...
 So it has been a little quiet on the Biche Breakfast side, but with good reason - we've moved!  Over a month ago now Antoine came to join me in Montreal and we moved to our new (well, old really) apartment in the Plateau Mont-Royal.  Now the walls are painted, the appliances are up & running, the boxes are unpacked, but we still have a little while to go before it is fully functional and to our taste.  That's the fun part though, right?

One thing's for certain, we LOVE the neighbourhood.  We are a stones-throw away from some amazing restaurants, cafes and bakeries... one of which I will claim has the best bread and patisseries in the city- Le Fromentier.  Today's breakfast and even the rest of the day paralleled this video from the movie J'ai tué ma mère, albeit a liiiitle simpler.

This weekend was spent back in Ottawa, family time and recharging my batteries a top priority.  Ever the breakfast enthusiast herself, my mother chose a Bonnie Stern recipe for muesli for Sunday breakfast, followed by croissants from Ichiban Bakery

It's not cake, it's breakfast!

Those who know me well are highly aware of my obsession with carrot cake.  Which is why I was so excited to find this recipe on Smitten Kitchen.  Slightly more elaborate than my usual fare for pancakes and the results gone in only one morning, I think this is one of those cases where pancakes should remain pancakes, and carrot cake should remain carrot cake.  Paired with breakfast was coffee made from my brand-spanking new Moka Express purchased at Quincaillerie Dante (part cooking store, part hunting shop). 


The cup and saucer were purchased at Finnegan's Flea Market several years back - hopefully Antoine and I can make it to Hudson this summer seeing as we are moving in together as of mid-May! xo
